Chris Quinn and Joe Lhota, respectively lead in their party's mayoral primaries a new NY1/Marist poll shows. In the Democratic primary Quinn garners 37% of registered Democratic voters followed by former Comptroller Bill Thompson at 13%, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio at 12%, Comptroller John Liu at 9% and former Councilman Sal Albanese at 2%, with 26% of registered Democrats undecided.
In the Republican primary, 55% of registered Republicans remain undecided, with only 20% who would of voted for Joe Lhota, if the primary was held today. The rest of the pack are down in the single digits, according to the poll, which was conducted by a extremely low sample of 172 people.. Doe Fund President George McDonald comes in at 8% support, John Catsimatidis at 5%, Manhattan Media Publisher Tom Allon at 4%, former Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. at 3%, and Brooklyn pastor A.R. Bernard at 2%.
Lhota, who is the current favorite among Republicans, largely due to Mayor Giuliani's backing - who according to the Marist poll encourages 71% of Republican voters to follow suit - would go on to lose to the Democratic party's favorite Quinn by 46% in a head-to-head general-election matchup.
According to the poll, if elections were held today, Quinn would lead Lhota, 64 percent to 18 percent, while Thompson and de Blasio also lead Lhota by a 40% margin.
Putting Carrion into the November mix as a Independence Party’s candidate, Quinn gets 59% of the vote, Lhota comes in at 17%, Carrion receives 8%, and 17% are undecided.
The poll was conducted Feb. 4-12, surveying 1,367 registered voters. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 2.7 percentage points. For the subsample of 875 Democrats, the margin of error is plus-or-minus 3.3 percentage points. For the subsample of 172 Republicans, the margin of error is plus-or-minus 7.5 percentage points.
