The New York City's requirement of a parental consent when Metzitzah B’peh is performed as part of a circumcision, is a 'reasonable approach', mayoral candidate Joe Lhota told Jewish students at a town hall meeting in Manhattan.
"Banning it is not, but [signing a consent form] is a reasonable approach to tell you what the risks are and if u understand the risks and you sign that you understand the risk, then the burden is on you. That's a good thing to do, I think government should do it. Government shouldn't tell you what to do, but direct you to go in the right direction," he said.
"I follow the issue. I have an enormous amount of respect for religious tradition and culture and all of that," he added.
